Chinese President Xi on “Preparing for War”

On Tuesday, President Xi told troops from a Chinese military base to “put all minds and energy on preparing for war.” This follows the announcement from the White House to sell weapon systems to Taiwan.

CNN reports, “The White House notified US Congress Monday that it was planning to move ahead with the sale of three advanced weapon systems to Taiwan, according to a congressional aide, including the advanced High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).”

This comes amid increased tensions between the States, Taiwan, and China over issues such as trade, Covid, and detention of Uyghur Muslims.

China for the past several months has gestured aggressively towards Taiwan following moves that show other countries legitimizing them as a state. They have responded by buzzing Taiwan airspace, which China does not recognize, and running extensive military drills that mock invasion.

China has never ruled out violence to take back “their” island, and they may escalate while many nations experiencing turmoil from Covid-19.
